Present time…

“I would have paid to see you take that doctor down,” Ethan said. “I’ll replay in my mind the takedown you did of the specialists who messed up Ms. Elise’s medications. But I’ll make your chest bigger and take off the braces with M&M bits stuck in them.”

Maya covered her mouth and laughed quietly into the phone until she snorted.

“There she is. There’s that kid that would peek out from behind the sixteen-year-old elderly woman I met at the hospital,” Ethan said, his voice smiling. “Are you doing okay? I know it brought up a lot of memories.”

“I can deal. I’m just worried about my friend.”

“Lucky friend... Are you going to bring him out to meet us?”

“Why, so pot-smoking Mika can get him hooked on the wacky weed?” Maya cackled.

Ethan sighed loudly. “Fourteen. She’s fourteen! I went ballistic. Vivian was so laid back about it I wondered if she’d smoked some too.”

Maya giggled softly into the phone.

“Mom misses you Maya. When is this bullshit sabbatical going to end?”

“I don’t know Ethan,” she whispered.

“I know it’s not my place—”

“I’m fine Ethan, I just need time.”

Pause.

“Independent Maya.” He sighed. “Ok. I’ll back off, but I’m here - Vivian and I both. I even know where you can get weed if you need it.”

“Thanks Ethan, I’ve gotta go get in the shower,” she said with a tired chuckle.

“Don’t fall asleep in there. You sound dead on your feet,” he warned.

“Thanks for everything, including making me laugh. I’ll talk to you soon,” she whispered. “Bye.”

Maya tried to force herself up. An achy tiredness seeped into her bones, down to the marrow. After a pep talk, she finally hauled herself up, washed her face, brushed her teeth, tried not to gag, and yanked off her clothes. She took two seconds to put her phone on Do Not Disturb mode and fell into the bed on the far side, so she didn’t disturb Mike. As she drifted off, the bed moved and a pair of powerful arms wrapped around her, hauling her against a big, warm body. They both sighed, and it was lights out.
